Axminster dates back to the Roman times and takes its name
from the River Axe and the old Abbey Church or ‘Minster’.
This lovely town lies within the beautiful countryside of
the Axe Valley, which is an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Five miles from the coast at Seaton, Beer and Lyme Regis,
Axminster is surrounded by hills, farmland, rivers and streams.
A very historic town, Axminster was granted a Royal Charter
in the 12th century, giving it a right to hold a weekly market
and a yearly fair. These rights are still exercised today,
although the June Festival now replaces the yearly fair.
In 1755 Thomas Whitly made the first Axminster Carpet, starting
a tradition for very high quality carpets which has continued
to this day.
Axminster is conveniently situated equi-distant on the A35
between Bridport and Honiton. It is about 22 miles from Exeter
Airport and 29 miles from the city of Exeter and the coastal
town of Lyme Regis is about 10 miles.
