Wainhomes South West wins top Regional
Award for Housebuilding

CORNWALL’s biggest housebuilder, Wainhomes (South West) Holdings Ltd is celebrating after winning a top ‘Seal of Excellence’ award from the National House Building Council, the national body that regulates quality in the house-building industry.

The NHBC recognised Wainhomes SW’s Peter Burrows as the best site manager working for a medium sized housebuilder in the South West. Peter was presented with the NHBC’s prestigious Regional Award and received a £5,000 cheque from the company.

Congratulating Peter, Bob Taylor, managing director of Wainhomes SW, said: “We are very proud that the company has won this prestigious award, as Wainhomes SW was only formed in June 1996.

“After only six years of operation, to be recognised by the NHBC as the best medium sized house builder in the South West and for Peter to beat off competition from 16,000 other site managers is a tremendous achievement.”

Based at Sticklepath near Okehampton, Wainhomes SW is one of the fastest-growing medium size housebuilders in the UK. The company has a portfolio of more than 50 house styles and builds over 300 properties a year. Wainhomes SW is currently working at 12 locations in Cornwall and Devon and every home it builds incorporates a special ‘W’ brick as a guarantee of the quality and value that has made Wainhomes SW one of the Westcountry’s most respected housebuilders.

Wainhomes SW has featured prominently several times in the NHBC’s 2002 Pride in the Job ‘Quality’ and ‘Seal of Excellence’ Awards for the quality of its homes in Cornwall and Devon. Peter has been recognised by the NHBC three times in the past four years for his work with Wainhomes SW. To make the grade, site managers must show that they can motivate their teams and sub-contractors to produce the highest quality standards in the homes they build.

Peter, of Notter Bridge near Saltash, beat off competition from 16,000 other site managers across the UK, including those from the NHBC’s South West Region, an area stretching from Bristol to Penzance and east to Southampton, to win the Regional Award for Wainhomes SW’s development of three and four-bedroomed semi-detached and detached new houses at Longmeadow, Hill Hay Farm, Fowey, Cornwall.
Peter said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won this Regional Award for Wainhomes SW and to be recognised as one of the country’s Top 100 Site Managers. I’d like to thank my team at Fowey for their commitment to producing top quality homes and for supporting me.”
Wainhomes SW was the only medium sized house builder in the South West to win a Regional Award and Peter was one of only 15 site managers from the region to receive Top 100 ‘Seal of Excellence’ Awards. Wainhomes SW has been invited to the NHBC’s UK Supreme Awards at the grand final at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on Friday, 10 January.

Paul Bamford, NHBC’s Senior Regional Director, said: “‘Pride in the Job’ awards are an integral part of NHBC’s work to encourage best practice in house-building. Site managers have tremendous influence over their sites and it is through their care, commitment and attention to detail that quality building is achieved.”

He added: “The winners have a huge enthusiasm for their work. Over many months of judging they have proved themselves to be the best in their profession, producing consistently high standards. It takes a great deal of determination and effort to come top out of 16,000 UK site managers and I am delighted to celebrate their achievements.”

The ‘Seal of Excellence’ winners in the South West received their awards at a special lunch held at Weston-Super-Mare’s Winter Gardens on Friday, 1 November. They were chosen from 50 site managers from the region who won first stage Quality Awards in June. Peter and his colleague Chris Kenny, who is site manager for Wainhomes SW’s Bystock Chase development in Exmouth, had already picked up £1,000 cheques from the company for being among the UK’s Top 400 site managers.

At the award ceremony, Rod MacEachrane, NHBC Commercial Director, said: “The best site managers are not islands but work closely with colleagues in a larger team. Today’s winners are champions for their companies and each of these awards is credit to all the companies as well as the site managers whose work is singled out today”

Wainhomes SW’s construction director, Irving Bunt, said: “The NHBC has again recognised Wainhomes SW’s continuing ability to produce a first class product and Peter Burrows as one of the South West’s Top 100 site managers.

“It’s a fantastic achievement that can only be attained by our ongoing commitment to building quality homes. Peter is an experienced manager who commands full respect and total support from his team on site. Our quality record and his dedication will ensure that we will continue to surpass our targets year after year.”
